How BWB Technologies is building sustainability into everything we do

At BWB Technologies, sustainability is something we genuinely care about. We encourage every team member to be aware of the impact we have on our community, industry, and the environment. It isn't a separate initiative or special requirement; it's a fundamental part of our way of working.

Making sustainability part of our DNA

We have worked hard to integrate sustainability into the rhythm and culture of our business. In 2023, we appointed Hazel Fell as our dedicated Sustainability Manager, whose thoughtful leadership helped us establish solid foundations. Hazel has now moved on to a new role, and we are proud of the legacy she leaves behind, one that empowers our entire team to champion sustainability as a shared responsibility. We have taken deliberate steps to embed it into our culture, systems, and decision-making processes.

By integrating sustainability into the very fabric of our business, we are not dependent on a single person or a specific project; it is embedded in how we operate across the entire company. Some of the key ways we've achieved this include:

• Incorporating sustainability as a regular agenda item in weekly team meetings, ensuring it becomes part of daily discussions and decisions.

• Including sustainability in annual management reviews and aligning our goals with long-term business strategy.

• Integrating sustainability measures into our task management systems so they are monitored and owned like any other business priority.

• Embedding sustainability within company objectives, creating accountability and consistency across the team.

• Launching our Community Fund, which supports local projects and organisations aligned with our values.

These efforts have helped us transition from intention to action. We are now close to obtaining our B Corp accreditation, a rigorous process that has guided us in reviewing and enhancing every part of our business. It is a way of ensuring our commitment to people, planet, and purpose is demonstrated not just in words, but integrated into how we operate.

Looking ahead with confidence

As we enter a new phase without a dedicated Sustainability Manager, we remain confident in the systems, habits and mindset we've developed as a team. Sustainability at BWB is now a shared responsibility, championed by every team member, not just one individual. This transition allows us to strength-test what we've built and continue improving together.

We're proud of how far we've come, and we're excited about what lies ahead. Our team is well-equipped, engaged, and dedicated to keeping sustainability at the centre of our operations, even as we grow and evolve.

Sharing what we've learned

We also want to support other small and medium-sized businesses on their own sustainability journeys. As an SME, we understand the challenges of balancing sustainability with day-to-day operations, resources and structure. Progress often starts with small, practical steps and builds through persistence, creativity and collaboration.

By sharing our experiences, including what has worked well and what has been more challenging, we aim to help others take their next steps with confidence. We welcome opportunities to exchange ideas, mentor others, and contribute to a broader movement of responsible business.
