Celebrating 20 Years of Innovation - BWB Turns 20!

This September, BWB Technologies proudly celebrates 20 years of flame photometry excellence. From our early foundations as a British start-up to becoming a globally recognised name in elemental analysis, this milestone marks two decades of scientific progress, product innovation, and meaningful partnerships.

From First Flame to Global Reach

Founded in September 2005 by Gary Bukamier, BWB Technologies began with a bold mission: to simplify elemental analysis through intuitive, reliable instrumentation. Our first major breakthrough came in 2007 with the launch of the BWB-1, the world’s first flame photometer to offer simultaneous multi-element detection with user-friendly controls.

Since then, we’ve released over a dozen models across nine generations of flame photometers, including speciality instruments like the BIO-AV, Sugar, SOIL, and Nuclear models. Our product range now supports applications in environmental monitoring, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and food production, with instruments trusted in over 100 countries.

Today, BWB Technologies stands as a symbol of British engineering excellence with a global outlook, empowering scientific discovery through innovation and integrity.

Technology That Evolves With the Times

In 2005, laboratories relied on manual reporting and bulky desktop PCs. Fast forward to 2025, and BWB instruments have evolved significantly, now featuring our pioneering Automatic Fluid Handling System (AFHS) which works with all of our origin series models. This advancement marks the first time flame photometry has been reliably automated, offering fast, precise, and effective sample handling without the need for AI or cloud-based systems. Housed in our signature blue enclosures, AFHS represents a major leap forward in laboratory efficiency and user experience, while staying true to our commitment to simplicity and reliability.

We have also expanded our capabilities through strategic acquisitions, including the Rank Brothers brand in 2022, known for dissolved oxygen measurement and magnetic stirring. These additions reflect our commitment to broadening scientific access while maintaining our core focus on flame photometry.

Sustainability at Our Core

Sustainability is woven into the fabric of how BWB operates. As an ISO 14001 and ISO 50005 certified company, we’ve set ambitious goals, including a 90% reduction in emissions by 2030. We’re also proud to support global reforestation efforts through our partnership with Eden Reforestation Projects, with over 31,000 trees planted so far.

Our packaging is recyclable, our supply chain is ethically sourced, and our operations are designed to minimise environmental impact. These efforts have earned us recognition, including the UK Company Culture Award for Best ESG Programme and a Gold CSR Excellence Award. To reinforce transparency in our sustainability efforts and provide additional reassurance to our customers, BWB is currently undergoing assessment for B-Corp accreditation.

Supporting Meaningful Causes

As part of our 20th anniversary celebrations, we’re proud to support Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières), a charity whose work spans borders and embodies the compassion, courage, and impact we value at BWB. Our donation will help fund 200 blood bags, a vital resource for emergency surgery and trauma care in some of the world’s most challenging environments. It’s a small but meaningful way to honour this milestone and contribute to life-saving efforts around the globe.

Hozan Edwards has been part of BWB Technologies since 2012, starting as a Production Technician and rising to Managing Director in 2021. His journey reflects the very ethos BWB upholds: hands-on innovation, integrity, and a commitment to making science more accessible. Hozan remains deeply involved in product development, working closely with the team to ensure every instrument is built with purpose and precision.

His leadership is marked by clarity, collaboration, and a genuine respect for the people around him. The atmosphere at BWB, one of mutual support, shared goals, and pride in our work, is a direct reflection of the culture he has helped to shape.
